Good morning, Tribe! Today we’re picking up Route 66 just outside Winslow, Arizona, on a Thursday, April 30th. And we start the morning with the dreaded “knock.”
We roll into town on the historic alignment, park up, and go exploring on foot with Kit — past Jay’s Garage, the Ten Motel, an old Texaco station turned art space, and a stretch of railroad history from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line.
We visit Peter Toth’s “Whispering Giant” totem pole, check out the HGTV-sponsored art cars, and finally make our way to the famous Standing on the Corner Park.
From there we head to La Posada, Mary Colter’s Harvey House hotel, and talk through why these railroad hotels existed in the first place.
Next, we point Henry toward the Jackrabbit Trading Post — an official Route 66 attraction that’s been open since 1949 — before continuing on toward Holbrook, catching the Wigwam Motel and calling it a night in a bus training parking lot.
