Before Jamestown, before Plymouth, there was St. Augustine, Florida, founded by Spain in 1565 and often called America’s oldest city. In this episode of TDC Places, we explore how St. Augustine became a permanent foothold for Spanish Florida, a fortified colonial city, a Gilded Age resort capital, and a key site in the American civil rights movement.
With local history professor Justin Lawson, we follow the story from Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and Jean Ribault’s fight for Florida to the dangerous St. Augustine Inlet, Fort Caroline, Matanzas, Mission Nombre de Dios, the city gates, the Cubo Line, coquina stone, Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Mose, and the Spanish colonial street grid that still shapes the city today.
Then we look at how Henry Flagler transformed St. Augustine through railroads, hotels, tourism, infrastructure, and public-private investment — including the Hotel Ponce de Leon, now Flagler College, Villa Zorayda, early poured concrete, Tiffany glass, Edison electricity, and the architecture that helped define the city’s image.
St. Augustine is not just America’s oldest city. It is a place where Spanish empire, military survival, Black freedom, Gilded Age opulence, preservation, infrastructure, and civil rights history are visible in the streets.
